Hail is one of the complicated phenomena on whose characteristics scientists have spent a lot of time researching ; however , there are still numerous unanswered questions concerning this beautiful , but harmful phenomenon which inflicts losses of millions of dollars each year . in 1981 , a hailstorm inflicted losses of more than hundreds of million dollars in the united state of America . In 2000 , a man was killed by a hailstone at the size of an apple . the biggest hailstone , ever seen , weighted 750 grams in canzas state ( 1970 ) . complexity of this phenomenon reveals by studying the complex stages through which it is formed – being formed in thunderful storms in which winds flow with the speed of 160km. / ph. Nowadays , scientists are studying complexity of this phenomenon by the means of satellites and radars equiped with infrared rays .
In other religions , there have been a lot of legends expressing god’s anger as causes of hails , lunar and solar eclipse , or a contact between gods’ canes as the cause of thunders . but , in 1400 years ago the Quran stated the cause of hail [ it will be discussed later ] , and it is a good reason for those who call the Quran as Prophet Mohammad’s imagination . Now, the question is that how the Prophet said something without naming source of his imagination , and that how he said the things which today scientists approve of it by the means of modern equipments . Also, if the Quran had not been relevated from divinity , and its author had written it according to his imagination , why would not it have become a part of history , or would not it have been rejected like false scientific theories , and how has it been up – to – date and fresh with training humans since far years ? In this article , initially we discuss 21 st century scientist’s theories about hail , and then refer to the Quran to see what it said 1400 years ago concerning this topic .
Phases of Hailstone Formation According To The Latest Scientific Facts :
At first, wind currents lead scattered cloulds to upper part of sky to from small , medium , and big hailstones , in the order of their sizes wind currents with 84-88-180 km. / p.h. rapidity . The clouds pile up like tall towers , and become condensed . Rain drops which are combination of millions of little , cool water clrops , are formed in these clouds . When temperature decreases to under zero , the mentioned water drops freeze , and form hailstones ; sometimes more than hundred million of water drops are required to form a hailstone .
“ The process usually takes 5 to 10 minutes ” , say scientists sometime , a hailstone thickness is about 10 cms. , and falls on the earth with 180 km. / p.h. rapadity .
Hail formation happens in very high states (positions ), sometimes with 18 kms. Height . Some of hailstones are made of other hailstones or snow particles in which dust , or small insects may be found scientists emphasizes that long clouds , because of being in touch with colder layers of atmosphere , are more likely to produce hailstones . High – pressure wind currents are required to provide preliminaries of hail formation , carry them , and overcome gravity , especially if hailstones are big . According to scientists’ statements , these currents give shape to condensed clouds . More winds going upward lead to bigger hailstones whe winds power could not carry hailstones , they fall down . If we divide these hailstones in two , we will see onion like , classified rings . These rings indicate that there are different phases in forming a hail, through each phase one ring ( layer ) is formed . Scientists observe that rain drops shower from all parts of a cloud , but hailstones only rain from special corridors called hail rows . All the mentioned phases are necessary to form a hailstone. There exist semi – constant hailstones in high positions and in the middle of clouds ; such hailstones may melt before getting to the earth , and if they are small , they will melt in the wind currents . Nowadays , it is a matter of sure that a noticeable number of hailstones ( 40 to 70 percent ) melt before reaching the earth . Scientists emphasizes that winds currents not only are responsible for making hails , but also leading condensed clouds to Troposphere in order to provide the required space to create electricity . Now , after becoming aware of certain scientific facts – on which western scientists agree – it is better refer to the Quran and discuss Quranic fact about hail formation .
Scientific Facts in the Quran
The Quran , in one of its magnificent verses , expresses all the previously stated facts concerning hail , in their arrangement as said before . The begining of the verse , “ Have you not seen how God drives the clould ” indicates that hail formation initiates with leading clouds to upper parts of atmosphere , and then condensing them by wind currents . The word ‛ drives : يُـجزی ’ means leading , and this is the first phase of hail formation – as observed before .
The second phase is expressed by “ God composes clouds : ثم يولف بينه ” , then the third phase which is formation of condensed clouds , is said as following , “ then converts them into mass : ثم يجعـله ركاما ”. The word ‛ ركم ’ means to pile up , and this is what happens in reality : clouds are led to upper parts of atmosphere by wind , then they form wide tower – like piles . The upper we go , the narrower the piles become , so that they seem like a mountain . Vsing the word ‛ ركاما ’ which means condensed clouds , needs more consideration [ because there are individuals who call the Quran as Prophet Muhammad’s immagination ] .
After being piled up and then condensed , clouds rain ; The Quran says , “ then you see the rain issuing out of the midst of them ”. Now adays , it is proved that raining severely ( الودق ) happens in all parts of the clouds , and the Quran says it with “ من خلا له ” . Following the rain – drops formation , it is time to for hailstones from millions of cold raindrops in especial areas in middle and at top of clouds ; hail – rain happens from the mentioned especial areas . “ And he sends down out of heaven mountain wherein is the hail ” , is how the Quran describes the stated facts . To describle condensed clouds , the Quran says “ mountains : جبال ” and scientists say “ towers ” . Again , such a similarity in description and order of events demand our more consideration . As said before , scientists realized that a number of hailstones melt either in clouds or in the air before getting to the earth ; the Quran says , “ so that he smites whom he will with it and turns it aside from whom he will ” .
The relationship between electricity [ maybe thunder ] and hail was the lastest subject on which scientists commented . According to them , areas where hailstones are formed , are perfect places in which electricity can shine . “ wellnigh the gleam of his lightening snatches away the sight …يكادُ سنا ” , the Quran says at the end of the verse .

" الم تران الله يزجي سحابا ثم يولف بينه ثم يجعله ركاما فترى الودق يخرج من خلاله وينزل من السماء من جبال فيها من برء فيصيب به من يشا ويصرفه عن من يشاء ويكاد سنا برقه يذهب الابصار "
